Changing our Diet: A step in the Right Direction for our Planet

(Translated by Ian Nandlall)

On June 2, 2010, a group of experts assembled by the UNEP released a report discussing the main sources of environmental deterioration. It is without surprise that the consumption of fossil fuels and agriculture are the main culprits. More specifically, the report states that "animal farming for meat and dairy products have a disproportionate impact on the lives of humans as well as the ecosystems of our planet". Many interesting statistics concerning the impacts of agriculture on the environment have been brought to light by the report (they were obtained through scientific data currently available):

-Agriculture requires 70% of fresh water consumed worldwide annually and is reponsible for 60% of water pollution due to increased levels of phosphorus and nitrogen;
-Agricultural activies take up 38% of the planet's surface;
-Echoing an earlier report from the FAO in 2006 which stated that farming was responsible for 18% of the production of greenhouse gases, the UNEP backed these results by claiming a figure of 19%.
-Agriculture is responsible for 30% of toxic pollution in Europe;
-Farm animals consume more than 50% of harvests worldwide;
-For every increase of wealth by 50%, the environmental impact increases by 60% to 80% in developing economies.

Marching for Veggie Pride in Toronto

 (Translated by Ian Nandlall)

We were many in the small street of Asquith on the morning of June 5 waiting for the start of the Toronto Veggie Pride Parade. Organisers dressed in pink or colored wigs ran in every direction, speaking to each other over the radio to make sure everything was going as planned. Many slipped on their costumes and compared their respective signs expressing their pride. Laughs, picture-taking, gatherings, and nervousness were all present on the small street adjacent to Toronto's reference library. Sound tests and last-minute checking of the floats took place simultaneously and resulted in an amusing cacophony. History was about to be made.

Oiled Birds: Kill Better than Clean

  (Translated by Nisha Coleman)

According to German biologist Silvia Gaus, killing the oiled birds is preferable to trying to save their lives as the cleaning processes are complicated and very painful for the birds. According to her, the middle-term survival rate for oil-soaked birds is less than 1%!

Here is something IMMEDIATE we can do to save birds: Stop eating chicken and turkey! The sad fate of marine birds in the gulf of Mexico represent a small percentage compared to the unfathomable suffering of birds that are farmed and treated atrociously by the poultry industry.

Edutainer Michael Greger was in Montreal

 (Translated by Nisha Coleman)

It was a great success for the Montreal Vegetarian Association, which was able to get 230 people to HEC Montreal on the sunny Saturday of May 29. The speaker, none other than Dr. Michael Greger, was worth the detour! After having read 5000 scientific studies in nutrition published in 2009, his conference entitled Latest is Clinical Nutrition, included information on toxicity in certain foods and the antioxidant properties of others. Dr. Greger abolished the usual serious tone of conferences by creating a dynamic, interactive relationship with the audience. This doctor specializing in public health confronts the audience with their lack of knowledge regarding their own diets.

One amazing fact that got everyone’s attention: white potatoes produce an insecticide that is toxic for humans. Dr. Greger reassured the stunned crowd that potatoes prove to be much less toxic without its skin!

Meatless Monday at the Bell Headquarters

 (Translated by Nisha Coleman)

On May 17, the Montreal Vegetarian Association was at the Bell headquarters in Dorval to promote the Meatless Monday campaign. The Bell employees took advantage of the event to visit our booth during their lunch break.

The booth attracted about 400 people who benefited from the brochures on Meatless Monday and vegetarianism as well as the valuable advice and information provided by our MVA volunteers. The employees were offered samples of Natura soy milk, Gardein products, and Jardin Santé veggie paté. They also took the opportunity to speak with Georges Laraque, who kindly accepted to hold the booth and talk about his experience with vegetarianism.

The event was a great success. For the majority, it was their first encounter with vegetarianism. They discovered the positive impacts of a vegetable based diet and how to make alternative food choices.

It was great pleasure for me to discus my new passion, vegetarianism, with my colleagues who were very open-minded.

Concordia - The Most Vegetarian-Friendly University in Montreal

(Translated by Ian Nandlall)

Concordia University is known for its programs in feminin studies and art, as well as its Molson School of Business. What is less known is that it is also the most vegan-friendly of all universities across the province.

After a motion voted by the Concordia Student Union (CSU) this winter, the university requires that all activities on campus offer vegan options and that every activity organized by the CSU offers 1/3 vegetarian options. This initiative was brought forward by Lucas Solowey of the Concordia Animal Rights Association (CARA). But that doesn't stop there...
