The Town of Gand institutes Veggie-day!

Translation by Chloe Boone

The Belgian town of Gand is the first Western city to propose its citizens refrain from meat consumption one day/week. Thursday (donderdag) is the day.

The municipal initiative to improve the health of the population and the environment kicked off Thursday, May 14, 2009. Five thousand municipal employees received free vegetarian meala to help get them "onboard" as depicted by this sailor manning his veggie-vessel in a promotional poster for the event. We at Montreal Vegetarian Association would like to salute the courageous and progressive administration of Gand and hope that municipalities world-wide will follow the lead of this trail-blazing town located 50km from Brussels.
