Animal products made mandatory in all meals served to school children in France

The Montreal Vegetarian association supports The Citizens’ Initiative for the Rights of Vegetarians (ICDV). And you?

A new decree in France published in the Journal Officiel on October 2nd 2011 outlined nutritional standards for all meals served in school cafeterias. According to the regulation, every meal must contain a source of protein, which is defined as a dish containing meat, fish, eggs, or cheese. The new nutritional policy is a means of ensuring that children receive well balanced and nutritional adequate meals in school. However, this new law also makes it mandatory to include animal products on every plate, disregarding all plant-based sources of protein. Vegetarian schoolchildren will be unable to rely on school lunches to meet their protein and nutrient needs.

Sponsorship: Volunteers needed

The Montreal Vegetarian Association is putting together a sponsorship project designed for those interested in the transition to vegetarianism. We need a dozen volunteers with experience in vegetarianism who would like to assist others to become vegetarians. You will be invited to a training session provided by the nutritionist Anne-Marie Roy and we will also be there to help you as needed.

During the sponsorship, you will be asked to meet once in person with the beneficiary, to accompany him/her once to the grocery store if they wish and to answer questions by email or phone for three months. It can be a great experience for you to discuss nutrition, recipes and personal motivation!
